Buying Guide: Import a Mini Excavator from China

Practical checklist to reduce risk and cost when importing mini excavators from Chinese manufacturers.

Step 1 — Define exact machine spec & required certifications

Decide operating weight, engine emission standard (EU/US Tier, depending on destination), attachments required, and whether CE or other certificates are needed for customs clearance and local registration.

Step 2 — Request detailed quotations (EXW, FOB, CIF)

Ask for quotes with clear Incoterms. Compare:

  • EXW (factory price) — buyer handles export and shipping
  • FOB (Free on Board) — supplier handles export, buyer arranges ocean freight
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) — supplier includes shipping & insurance to port

Step 3 — Pre-shipment inspection & sample photos

Request factory photos, testing videos, and third-party inspection if needed. Check paint quality, control panel, and hydraulic leaks before shipment.

Step 4 — Shipping & customs tips

  1. Choose Ro/Ro or container shipping depending on machine size and export packing requirements.
  2. Prepare commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and certificate of origin.
  3. Work with a reliable freight forwarder who knows heavy equipment clearance in your country.

Step 5 — After-sales & spare parts

Confirm warranty terms, spare parts delivery time, and local service partner availability. Keep a small stock of wearable parts (pins, bushes, filter elements).
